For days it has been impossible to escape the controversy – some National Football League players are choosing to kneel during the playing of the national anthem before games. At a Sept. 22 rally in Alabama, President Donald Trump criticized the players' silent protests by saying, “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say ‘Get that son of a b**** off the field right now.’”

In our Sept. 21 edition, we introduced you to the successes and challenges international students face when adjusting to life in America. Something we noticed while speaking to them was the uneasiness many of them have experienced. Many of the students told us their families were uncomfortable with their decision to attend school in America because of the national discussion on immigration.

Houston is devastated. Hurricane Harvey rained 19 trillion gallons of water over southeast Texas, 42 inches in four days. When it stopped, 100,000 Houstonians were left without power, 35,000 people had fled the city, and 63 people were dead. To date, the total property and economic damage in Houston is estimated to be $50 billion.

Last year 674 students participated in the Study Abroad program. Beyond their academic pursuits, they gained valuable cultural and personal experiences in countries like Morocco, Swaziland and Brazil. It's likely even more students will participate in the program this year.

I sat on the edge of my bed, one hand grabbing my chest to hold my broken heart together, the other catching hot tears as they fell from my face. It was the Sunday before CM Life left for a convention in Texas and I had just found that out my grandma had passed. Two nights before, I had made it back home from my baby cousin’s funeral. I held his tiny body for the first time at my uncle’s funeral two months prior to that in January.
