Weaving Art With Mentorship

Nestled in the serene woods of Shepherd, Michigan, you can find the Barstow home. Donated to CMU in 1992, the property features an organic, natural design and overlooks the Chippewa River. Katie Mongoven, the 2024-25 Barstow Artist-in-Residence, can often be found in the nearby studio, working on hand-dying fabric, beading, weaving or embroidery.

Every day looks different for Mongoven, who is a Chinese American artist from Washington, D.C. Sometimes she fills her days practicing her art, while others are spent preparing and teaching workshops or giving artist talks.
