African American Influence in Music

Multicultural Academic Student Services hosts African American Influence in Music as part of Black History Month events Monday, Feb. 5 in the Bovee University Center. Senior Bryce Robinson presented about a variety of genres, including jazz, hip hop, blues and more. He also highlighted and played songs from influential artists, such as Louis Armstrong, Aretha Franklin, Chuck Berry and others. The event aimed to show how African American music has influenced popular culture throughout history and provides a platform for resistance, political expression and creativity.

Haleem 'Stringz' Rasul Hip Hop Master Class

The Department of Theatre & Dance hosts Haleem “Stringz” Rasul hip hop/jit master class Sunday, Feb. 4 in Rose Hall. Rasul is the CEO of at Hardcore Detroit, a dance and design brand. CMU students were encouraged to attend the master class, along with a film screening of “The Jitterbugs: Pioneers of the Jit” before the master class.  

New Venture Challenge Focus Workshop

Central Michigan University's New Venture Challenge hosts Focus Workshop: Testing your idea where students have the opportunity to learn start-up skills, network and launch business ideas on Thursday, Feb. 1, in Grawn room 150G. The NVC Focus Workshop: Testing your Idea was taught by Entrepreneurship faculty member Dr. Howard Haines from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The workshop was designed to guide CMU students' business ideas into the right direction.  

'Journey Into My Imagination' Dress Rehearsal

Central Michigan senior Isabella Silos directs and choreographs the ‘Journey Into My Imagination’ dress rehearsal Wednesday, Jan. 31, in Theater-on-the-Side. The show featured several CMU dancers and theater majors as part of Silos’ dance studies capstone project. The performances occurred Thursday, Feb. 1, Friday, Feb. 2, and Saturday, Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m.

Black Arts: Resistances & Transformation

MASS Office & Ku’Juana Quinn hosts Black Arts: Resistances & Transformation with guest speaker Dr. Yusef Shakur, Thursday, Feb. 1, in the EHS building French Auditorium. This event is the first of many being held for Black History Month 2024 on campus, the next event being African American Influence in Music, Monday, Feb. 5, in the Bovee UC 108. 

CMU Basketball VS Northern Illinois

Central Michigan’s men’s basketball team defeats Northern Illinois 84-77 on Tuesday, Jan. 30 in McGuirk Arena. Sophomore guard Paul McMillan IV was the night’s lead scorer with 21 points. 

Women's BBall VS. Western

Central Michigan's women's basketball team beat Western Michigan 53-45 for their second MAC conference win of the season on Saturday, Jan. 27 in McGuirk Arena. Junior guard Lisa Tesson was the game's lead scorer with 12 points. Senior center Rochelle Norris lead the team in rebounds with 11 boards. The win brings the team to 2-6 in MAC conference play and 4-14 overall.

Central Michigan's women's basketball team beat Western Michigan 53-45 for their second MAC conference win of the season on Saturday, Jan. 27 in McGuirk Arena. 2nd Annual Round Dance

CMU North American Indigenous Student Organization hosts it's second annual Round Dance on Saturday, Jan. 27, in the Bovee Univerity Center Rotunda from 5 to 9 p.m. The event was emceed by Bud Day and the leading Stick man was Nathan Isaac. CMU NAISO's Round Dance incorporates traditional songs with a dance floor open to all.  

Spring MainStage 2024

The gymnasium floor was covered in student organizations from club sports, sororities, fraternities and campus departments at Spring MainStage from 2 to 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 26, in Finch Fieldhouse. MainStage is an opportunity for students to find out what the organizations on campus have to offer. With over 80 RSOs at MainStage, attendees had a plethora of tables to choose from. 

Holocaust Remembrance Day

Hillel at CMU hosts Holocaust Remembrance Day with guest speaker Holocaust survivor Dr. Rene Lichtman, Thursday, Jan. 25, in the Bovee UC Rotunda. This event was part of Jewish Heritage Week 2024 with the final event being Shabbat Dinner, Friday, Jan. 26 in Kulhavi Hall 146.  

Women's Basketball VS Ohio

Central Michigan's women's basketball team fell to Ohio 68-58 Wednesday, Jan. 24 in McGuirk Arena. Junior guard Karrington Gordon was CMU's lead scorer with 14 points. Senior center Rochelle Norris lead the team in rebounds with nine. The loss brings CMU's record to 1-6 in MAC conference play and 3-14 overall.

CMU Men's Basketball VS Miami (Ohio)

Central Michigan's men's basketball team defeats Miami (Ohio) 71-55, Tuesday, Jan. 23 in McGuirk Arena. Junior guard Anthony Pritchard was the night's lead scorer with 18 points. This game brings the Chippewa's overall score to 10-9 and their Mid-American Conference score to 5-2.⁠ 

CMU Wrestling VS Edinboro

Central Michigan University's wrestling team defeated PennWest Edinboro 44-0 in their MAC opener Sunday, Jan. 21 in McGuirk Arena. The team won all 10 of their matches and scored bonus points in eight. 

MLK Charity Basketball Game

Multicultural Academic Student Services hosted the MLK Charity Basketball game on Friday, Jan. 19, in the Student Activity Center, Small Court Forum: Courts 5 & 6. The game was students vs. faculty/staff, monetary and non perishable donations were accepted during the games. All proceeds went to the CMU Student Food pantry.  

CMU Beats Toledo

Central Michigan’s men’s basketball team defeated Toledo 65-62 on Friday, Jan. 19 in McGuirk Arena. Junior guard Anthony Pritchard was the night’s lead scorer with 20 points. Graduate student guard Brian Taylor led the team in rebounds with 15. Junior forward Markus Harding led the team in assists with 5. The win brings CMU’s record to 4-2 in MAC play and 9-9 overall.

It Starts With Me: A Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Showcase

Multicultural Academic Student Services hosts It Starts With Me: A Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Showcase as part of MLK week events Thursday, Jan. 18 in the Biosciences Building. The event aimed to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life through artistic expression. Students and community members performed spoken word poetry, music, dance and more. 

Women's Basketball VS Ball State

Central Michigan's women's basketball team fell to Ball State 79-47 during the annual Hoops for Hunger game Wednesday, Jan. 17 in McGuirk Arena. Junior guard Tiana Timpe and senior center Rochelle Norris led the game, each scoring nine points. The loss brings CMU's record to 2-12 overall and 1-4 in conference play. With around 3,000 students from nearby elementary and middle schools filling the stands, the game had the season's highest home attendance yet. 

Music Education Q & A

The stage was covered by students, alumni, and faculty at the CMU School of Music event, Music Education Q & A from 7:30 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 16, in the Staples Family Concert Hall. The event was to help answer questions and give advice about what it is like to be in the field of music education and what the programs at CMU have to offer. The panelists of three accomplished music educators included Meredith Lincoln, Zach VanderGraaff, Jo Ann Gross, and was hosted by Nancy Summitt.

MLK Day of Service

The CMU Multicultural Academic Student Services Office hosts the MLK Day of Service with the Mary Ellen Brandell Volunteer Center, Monday, Jan. 15 in the Bovee University Center. Students were offered lunch and encouraged to participate in various volunteer activities to benefit veterans and children. Activities such as creating blankets, writing thank you notes, and decorating snack bags were part of the Martin Luther King Jr Week 2024. Other events such as guest speakers and a MLK charity basketball game will be held throughout the week as well.
