With the score at 5-3 through five innings it was looking like Central Michigan baseball was in store for another close game. That changed quickly, as CMU exploded for 11 runs in the sixth, giving the Chippewas an 16-3 win over Purdue Fort Wayne on Tuesday in Fort Wayne.
The Chippewa offense got off to a hot start scoring four runs in the first inning while only totaling two hits in the frame. The big blow in the inning came off the bat of Bryson Webb when he singled in two runs.
After the Mastodons got one back in their own half of the first, CMU got back on the board. This time in the third inning when a bases loaded walk from Mikey Murphy scored a run making the score 5-1.
PFW would answer back in its half of the third, getting two runs off a double and bringing the team within two runs of CMU.
Heading to the sixth, the Chippewas looked to add as many insurance runs as they could to pull away. The rally started as the first two CMU batters reached base, and after an out, an Aydin Wright double scored both runners, extending the lead to 7-3.
CMU continued the inning after multiple PFW mistakes on the mound. Two wild pitches that moved the Chippewa runners into scoring position along with putting a run on the board.
PFW continued to shoot itself in the foot the team committed two more errors that allowed three more runs to score for CMU bringing the score to 13-3. The Chips then used back-to-back doubles by Rees Campanale and Wright to bring the score to 16-3.
The Chippewas ended the game early for a second consecutive Tuesday, as it held the Mastodons scoreless in its final two innings of play, with the game ending in only seven innings.
Right-handed pitcher Hayden Bailey handled the bulk on the mound for CMU, throwing four innings while allowing five hits and striking out two. The back end for the Chippewas was dominant with all three of the relievers not allowing a hit.
Next up for CMU is Kent State with the team welcoming the Golden Flashes to Mt. Pleasant and Theunissen Stadium. Game one of the three game set is scheduled for Friday with first pitch at 3 p.m.
