"Mickey 17" is a sci-fi thriller starring Robert Pattinson ("The Batman"), as Mickey Barns, an expendable crew member aboard a migration ship set to explore a new planet that is suitable for human life.
After being left behind on an expedition and barely making it back before liftoff, Barns comes back to find that the crew has already cloned him again and has to deal with the reality of living with another copy of himself.
Like the song "Mickey" by Toni Basil suggests, this movie absolutely blew my mind! I was enthralled by everything it presented.
First off, I loved Pattinson's acting. Throughout the entire film, Pattinson does a unique voice for each clone but in particular for 17 and 18, who you see for most of the movie. Pattinson's acting was really impressive and totally believable.
Naomi Ackie ("Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker") puts in her best performance yet as Mickey's military love interest, Nasha Barridge. She's the driving force of the film that allows the story to move forward at a natural pace.
She keeps a nice balance between the two clones of Mickey, leading to an interesting romance that was really fun to watch unravel.
Mark Ruffalo ("The Avengers) and Toni Collete ("Knives Out") are also fantastic as the main antagonists, playing not-so-subtle caricatures of some famous people you might know. Their dynamic was hilarious to watch but also a wake up call to who we are entrusting our safety with; and highlights the importance of keeping our humanity, rather than throwing it away for a simpler life.
The musical score in this movie is fantastic. It's a very heavy-but-quick-paced score that pairs excellently with the intensity but zaniness of the movie's ongoing plot. My head was bobbing throughout the entire movie, and right when I got out of the theater, I added the soundtrack to my YouTube study playlist. I hope to acquire the vinyl when it releases as well.
The visuals of this movie are gorgeous. The alien planet they visit reminded me a lot of Hoth from "Star Wars," but it wasn't a copy-and-paste. Instead, the planet has it's own unique attributes, and the natives of the planet are extremely entertaining.
Overall, I can't gush about this movie enough. The action, comedy, drama and romance are all engaging and fun. Pattinson proves that he is on top of his acting skills.
This movie is a 10/10 and should be seen immediately!
