A dominant first inning set the tone for Central Michigan softball as it cruised to a 4-0 victory over Michigan State on Tuesday evening. The Chippewas move to 11-15 overall and remain 3-2 in conference.

CMU wasted no time putting pressure on Michigan State pitcher Jacey Schuler. After a fielder’s choice and a single, senior Allyssa Hollo delivered a two-run double to right-center, plating sophomore Carly Sleeman and freshman London Williams. Moments later, sophomore Grace Koenig followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 3-0.

The Chippewas tacked on another run in the second inning when Williams drew a bases-loaded walk, giving CMU a comfortable four-run cushion.

Compau silenced the Spartans’ bats with a complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits while striking out five and walking two. MSU's best scoring opportunity came in the first inning after a walk and an error allowed a runner to reach third, but Compau helped to maintain CMU’s early lead.

Sophomore Emma Lotus provided a spark for the Chippewas’ offense, finishing with two hits, including a double. Hollo led the team with two RBIs, while Williams and Koenig each drove in a run.

The Spartans struggled to generate offense, collecting only four hits and striking out five times. Sophomore Kendall Smiley led the Spartans with two hits, but the team failed to string together any sustained threats against Compau. Schuler lasted just 1.1 innings, surrendering four runs on six hits before being replaced by freshman Carsyn Cassady, who kept CMU off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game.

The Chippewas will stay on the road as they take on Buffalo in a weekend series beginning at 3 p.m. on Friday. Saturday's double header will begin at 1 p.m. with game two following.
