The Judicial Branch of Central Michigan University’s Student Government Association gave their first report of the semester and discussed the process of SGA’s case consideration form. Chief Justice Madison Coleman said this form allows them to review any issues submitted by students regarding SGA.
“It’s a way for students who have any issues or any cabinet members to fill out the form and we could look to see if we have the jurisdiction to do anything about the case,” Coleman said.
The Judicial Branch is the newest branch of SGA. It was introduced in January of 2024 and serves as a check and balance for the other two branches.
Currently, the branch hasn’t had any cases that were within their jurisdiction but will be seeing what their role is in this year’s elections according to Coleman.
“I think our role is just to be here for students,” Coleman said. “Elections are coming up and that's a big thing … We’re going to touch bases with the election committee and see what we can do as far as the judicial branch in terms of like if someone violates campaign policy or anything of that sort.”
SGA releases the Intent of Candidacy Form for leadership positions
This week, students in SGA were given the candidacy intent form and election handbook, the first step in the election process. Director of Elections Praise Oyimi said that these elections are a chance for change.
“This is an opportunity for fresh ideas if voted, new ideologies, new methods and even better student awareness,” Oyimi said.
He said that every student across campus is affected by who is put into power during these elections
“I think the biggest thing that people fail to understand is that SGA holds a student power that no other organization holds,” Oyimi said. “Because the Board of Trustees, the president, the vice president they see SGA as the student’s feedback.”
The candidacy intent form is due by this Friday at 5 p.m. Oyimi says signatures for candidates will be collected next week and candidates will prepare for debates and campaigns in the following weeks.
