The Office of LGBTQ Services and Gender Equity Programs, in collaboration with Multicultural Academic Student Services, is hosting a screening of the 2016 coming of age drama “Moonlight” at 5 p.m. Feb. 17 in the Center for Student Inclusion and Diversity (CSID), located in Bovee University Center 108.

“Moonlight” follows the journey of a young African American man as he navigates his identity and sexuality while facing the struggles of childhood, adolescence and adulthood. The event will conclude with a discussion about the film’s themes, and snacks will be provided.

“This event was an idea our office director, Bee (Taylor), had at the beginning of the semester,” said Ellie Johnson, a student program assistant with the LGBTQ Services and Gender Equity Programs office. “We wanted to show a film that somewhat relates to both Valentine’s Day and Black History Month while straying away from the clichés and heterosexual stereotypes often presented.”

The screening follows last week’s LGBTQ+ Trailblazers event, which was also hosted in collaboration with the Multicultural Academic Student Services office.

“That event was a huge success,” Johnson said. “We are hoping to have an equally successful event next Monday and ultimately hope to collaborate with other offices for similar events in the future.”

Johnson said the event is open to all students to foster inclusivity and meaningful conversations about identity and representation in film.
