The MyMichigan Health Foundation has announced over 40 different scholarships totaling more than $300,000 available for area healthcare students in their educational and professional careers.

Denise O’Keefe, the executive director of MyMichigan Health Foundation, said the foundation's mission is connecting and creating healthy communities.

“We are looking to support healthcare students as a pipeline for future healthcare professionals that work in our service areas,” she said. “I, along with a team, establish scholarship review committees, coordinate the advertising of them, the marketing and the process of every student application.”

O’Keefe said there are a variety of healthcare specialties that are eligible for scholarships.

“There are scholarships for careers in nursing, pharmaceutical, physical therapy, radiology, respiratory therapy, social work, speech pathology and so much more within the healthcare arena,” she said. "Because there's so many out there, we don’t just award a student one scholarship, they could be eligible for multiple.”

O’Keefe said everything is outlined under the scholarship on their website such as who is eligible, what the application process looks like and how it’s reviewed.

“Some of the applications require letters of recommendation or an essay,” she said. “Everything is done online and electronically.”

O’Keefe said Central Michigan University students should look through each of the scholarships because a lot of them are based around the students' hometown communities. She said they have to be from one of the counties where the scholarship originates from.

The list of scholarships are available online at www.mymichigan.org/scholarships. Applications close April 1 and the applicant will know of their status June 30.

“This is one of the best investments of the students' time and probably the highest pay rate of return that they will receive,” O’Keefe said. “It really has a huge payback if they’re seeking a healthcare field.”
