CMU womens basketball ends 2024 with a win
In its final game of non-conference play and the calendar year, Central Michigan women's basketball secured a 54-50 victory over the Milwaukee Panthers on Sunday afternoon. The win puts its record at 4-7 on the season.
CMU shot just 16-61 from the field, while Milwaukee shot 19-64. Despite the cold shooting, both teams held firm with the lead changing 12 times.
The Chippewas and Panthers found themselves in a gritty defensive battle, with both offenses struggling to make shots. This led to a 22-20 score at halftime in favor of Milwaukee.
CMU regrouped at halftime and came out strong in the third quarter, scoring 20 points, matching its first-half total. Junior forward Demetria Prewitt provided a crucial spark, going 8-for-8 from the free-throw line, while freshman guard Madi Morson led the team with 12 points.
Central Michigan entered the third quarter and equaled its first-half total of 20 to take a 40-36 lead into the fourth. Its defense also forced Milwaukee into low-percentage shots, holding them to 4-for-18 shooting from beyond the arc.
CMU went 10-11 from the free throw line to fend off the Panthers in the fourth quarter and grab the 54-50 win.
Nine different players contributed to CMU's scoring with Prewitt and Morson combined 22 points, while junior guard Taylor Anderson stuck six rebounds and freshman forward Riley Smith with seven.
The Chippewas travel to Buffalo, New York to open the new year with Mid-American Conference play at 6 p.m. on January 1.
