Central Michigan football announced on Monday that Army offensive line/co-offensive coordinator coach Matt Drinkall will be taking over as head coach for the Chippewas.

He will be replacing former head coach Jim McElwain, who announced his retirement on Nov. 20.

Drinkall spent six seasons with Army, including this year where it went 11-1 and secured an American Athletic Conference Championship. Army West Point also ranked No. 22 nationally this season.

Before taking the role with Army, Drinkall served as a head coach at Kansas Wesleyan University for five seasons. In his final season with the team, he received the 2018 Coach of the Year honors, leading the Coyotes to a 13-1 record.

While also serving as the offensive coordinator for Kansas Wesleyan, he led his team to a school record 54.3 points per game and 530.8 yards per game in 2018.

Drinkall also spent two years with Western Illinois and six years at St. Ambrose University.

He will be introduced to the CMU community at the "Fired up to be a Chippewa" event at noon on Tuesday in the atrium of the John G. Kulhavi Events Center/McGuirk Arena.
