Program Board to show Indigenous movie "Woman Walks Ahead"
The Program Board is hosting a movie showing of “Woman Walks Ahead” directed by Susanna White at 7 p.m on Nov. 14 in Pearce Hall 127.
The movie showing is in partnership with the Office of Indigenous Affairs and in honor of Indigenous Heritage Month. Kasey Perez, director of the Office of Indigenous Affairs, said the event would be "very casual."
Perez said the movie is a historical piece set in the 1890s starring mainstream actress Jessica Chastain. She said the film discusses colonization and many of the battles the indigenous tribes faced during that time, and still do today.
“(It) portrays when chiefs were going through difficult times,” Perez said. “(It shows that) Indigenous people had a point to what they were fighting for.”
Though the Program Board chose the movie, Perez said the board came to her for the decision. Perez said she believed this was a good choice because of how mainstream the movie was.
“When you have a mainstream film that has a mainstream actress like Jessica Chastain…that will pique the interest for students to attend," Perez said.
Cocoa, Crafts, and Beading at 1 p.m on Friday, Nov 15 in the Center for Student Inclusion and Diversity in the first floor of the Bovee University Center. Students are invited to bring crafting projects to work on. Perez said that the event is also open for students who have questions and want to talk more about the movie showing.
- Perez said that there are more events coming up for Indigenous Heritage Month including:
- Shi Shi Be Bodewadmi Bingo will be held at 6 pm on Monday, Nov 18 in the Engineering and Technology building in room 116. Students will learn basic words in Bodewadmi, an Indigenous language.
