Queer Halloween event to offer scary movie, baked goods, costume contest
The Center for Student Inclusion and Diversity (CSID) will be hosting Queer Halloween, an event with Halloween-themed activities and food. It is taking place at 4 p.m. on Oct. 30 in the CSID Room (108) in the Bovee University Center.
The event will be coordinated with the help of Spectrum, a registered-student organization on campus that helps with programming and events that involve LGBTQ+ topics, according to Bee Taylor, director of LGBTQ+ Services and Gender Equity Programs.
"Queer folks love Halloween," Taylor said. "It’s a bit of a stereotype, but we do."
They said the event will include a lineup of scary movies to watch, baked goods to eat and a Halloween costume contest with prizes. They said they want a welcoming space free of pressure and full of fun and community.
"My hopes are that queer and trans students have a good time and find community together in a space without pressures of drinking, drugs, or other substance use," Taylor said. "No shame to those who engage with substances, but having a space where those things aren’t an expectation is also important."
They said that people coming to the event will find it to be a great introduction to the Halloween weekend with free food and wholesome community fun.
"I’m sure that folks will have lots of big plans for the weekend and I want to give a good send-off from an affirming space," Taylor said.
