Upcoming event: Understanding Asian Identity
International students who are from Asia will talk about their experiences in the United States and at Central Michigan University.
The event, Understanding Asian Identity, will take place at 6 p.m. today in Pearce Room 127 and is one of the events lined up for Asian Pacific Heritage Month at CMU.
The student panel will talk about their experiences overcoming cultural challenges and their opinions on being regarded as the “model minority,” which portrays Asians as exceptionally successful and intelligent.
Lindsey Nguyen, the host of the event, said she wanted to host this event after noticing a division between international Asian students and Asian American students.
“International Asian students stay together, and Asian American students stay together,” she said. “This also goes for international students and American students in general, and it’s evident in the cultural RSOs on campus.”
The student panelists will include Oyunbileg Baljinnyam, Lasya Priya Dande, Sunmin Lee, Xiaobai Chen, Sakshyat Sharma and Pratham Agarwal.
Nguyen said she hopes attendees of the event will be able to become more culturally aware of diverse students at CMU.
“Although International students are almost completely different from American students, I hope attendees can find some similarities like issues of fitting in, academic pressure or identity struggles,” she said.
