Iconic wrestling head coach Tom Borrelli announces retirement
After 33 seasons with Central Michigan wrestling, head coach Tom Borrelli will retire after the 2023-24 NCAA Championships. CMU Athletics announced the retirement on Monday via social media and its website.
The announcement comes after Borrelli led the Chippewas to their 17th Mid-American Conference Championships, their 15th with Borrelli at the helm.
At last weekend's championships, he was named MAC Coach of the Year for this season. Borrelli has taken home the award a record 15 times throughout his career.
Since joining the Chippewas in 1991, Borrelli has won a total of 30 MAC Championships, including regular season and tournament titles. He also led CMU to 11-straight MAC titles from 2002-12.
Borrelli has coached 45 All-Americans and 93 MAC champions, including Alex Cramer, who just won two-straight MAC titles in the 174 weight class.
Overall, Borrelli went 368-179 with the Chippewas and 154-36 in MAC duals.
Three Chippewa wrestlers will take the NCAA stage one final time with Borrelli. Cramer, graduate student Corbyn Munson and redshirt senior Johnny Lovett compete at the NCAA Championships starting on March 21.
