On Monday, February 12, students will get the chance to take a step back in time and learn the history and legacy of Black veterans in the upcoming event Valor and Resilience: The Legacy of Black Veterans.

The event will take place at the Sarah & Daniel Opperman Auditorium in Park Library at 6 p.m. and is one of the many events lined up for Black History Month at Central Michigan University.

Madison Coleman, a junior at CMU and active member of the Michigan Army National Guard, will host the event.

Coleman said the event will start off with a PowerPoint presentation explaining some of the history and notable Black service members starting from the 1700s to the present day.

Following the presentation, attendees will get the chance to unwind and participate in a Kahoot that will recap the presentation.

To finish it off, Lieutenant Colonel Leonard Rusher, a veteran will share his experiences and insights into being a Black service member. Attendees will also get the chance to ask Rusher questions.

Coleman will also share some of her own personal  insights and experiences as a young Black woman in the army.

She said she hopes attendees can take away knowledge as well as a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices made by Black servicemembers.

“They are sacrificing their lives for, not only the country, but the people that live in it,” she said. “I’m hoping students get a newfound appreciation and respect for those who have served and or died for this country and for them to take a piece of this history home with them.”
