Paint a brick for Stonewall in honor of Pride Month, April 25
On April 25, Out in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, otherwise known as oSTEM, will be hosting an event, Paint a Brick for Stonewall.
At this event, students will have the opportunity to paint a brick at oSTEM’s general meeting from 5 to 6 p.m. at Dow Science 179.
The painted bricks will be stacked outside the Bovee University Center for the last week of Pride Month to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall Riots, according to Engage Central.
According to an article from history.com, the Stonewall riots began on June 28, 1969, when New York City Police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay club located in New York City. This raid sparked a violent confrontation between the police and patrons of the bar lasting for six days after the police roughly hauled employees and patrons out of the bar.
The article said this moment in history served as a catalyst for the Gay Rights Movement, leading to the formation of several LGBTQ+ advocacy organizations such as the Gay Liberation Front and Human Rights Campaign.
A year after the incident, thousands marched in the streets of Manhattan from the Stonewall Inn to Central Park in what was America’s first gay pride parade.
Any students are welcome to attend the event and may RSVP on Engage Central. Painting supplies and bricks will be provided at the meeting.
