CMU women’s basketball falls to Bowling Green
After being outscored 27-9 in the second quarter, Central Michigan women’s basketball had no answer for Bowling Green as it fell 101-68 on Wednesday.
The Chippewas are now 3-11 overall and 1-2 in Mid-American Conference play. The Falcons advance to 13-2 overall and 2-1 in MAC play.
Freshman guard Sydney Harris continued her scoring effort with 23 points along with five rebounds and two assists.
“She's a great scorer,” said head coach Heather Oesterle. “We've played well the last few games because we've had good inside-outside play. And today we had just outside play. We have got to get our post scoring inside.”
Sophomore guard Karrington Gordon came off the bench for the Chippewas and put up 10 points, going 50% from the field.
The Chippewas' defense struggled allowing the Falcons to produce 13 three-pointers and grab 18 offensive rebounds.
“It came down to we had 68 points, but it was defending the three point line and their post play,” Oesterle said. “And we started out trapping their posts, and then they started kicking it out for threes so we have to do a way better job defensively.”
The Chippewas came into the matchup out-rebounding their opponents 486-468 but, they had trouble maintaining their consistency on the boards against the Falcons as they were outrebounded 43-26.
“I just think they outworked us to some balls,” Oesterle said. “We're gonna watch every single one of their 18 offensive rebounds because those lead to kick out threes for them.”
After back-to-back three-pointers from Harris to start the first quarter, the Chippewas had trouble finding the basket, leading to a 9-0 run for the Falcons to put them up 14-8. Bowling Green continued its momentum and ended the quarter up 26-20.
After trading baskets to begin the second quarter, the Falcons took control and extended their lead into double-digits with a score of 52-27 following a 22-2 run. Bowling Green outscored CMU 27-9 in the quarter, leading to the Chippewas fighting a 53-29 deficit heading into halftime.
CMU was unable to get anything going in the second half to mount a comeback as the Falcons continued their offensive production and defeated the Chippewas, 101-68 to hand them their second-consecutive loss.
The Chippewas welcome conference rivals Western Michigan to McGuirk Arena on Saturday at 1 p.m.
