Sheriff's road patrol deputies are not considered mandatory employees in Isabella County and so were facing elimination following a Feb. 27 vote against a millage increase. However, this spring the county Board of Commissioners directed staff to find roughly $515,000 to keep deputies on the road through the end of the calendar year. Police responded to shots fired at the Globe at Lexington Ridge early in the morning on April 24 after repeatedly telling a group to leave a parking lot.

On Saturday, April 23, 2022, Isabella County Sheriff Officers responded to a large gathering in the parking lot of the Globe apartments, on Deerfield Road. According to Sheriff Michael Mains, officers asked the group to leave, but they resumed partying shortly after in another parking lot.

Deputies made contact with the group two or three times, asking them to leave, each time resulting in them moving to a new location.

Around 2:30 a.m., officers believed the issue was resolved and the group had broken up and went  home for the night. Mains said officers who were patrolling the area noticed the apartment complexes were quiet, leading them to believe the partying stopped.

Approximately half an hour later, the Sheriff’s office received reports of shots being fired in the parking lot of the Globe Apartments. The officers arrived as partygoers were fleeing the scene.

Sheriff Mains said a couple witnessed two men arguing, possibly over a woman. When the topic of guns came up, the pair began arguing over who owned a bigger weapon.

“Both male suspects shot off rounds into the air," Sheriff Mains said. “They then scattered before law enforcement arrived.”

No suspects were identified and it is unknown if the people who fired shots were associated with any of the parties happening in the apartment complex that night.

An investigation into the matter is underway.

Anyone with information on this incident or the suspects is encouraged to call the Isabella County Sheriff’s Department at (989)- 772- 5911.
