CMU softball goes 3-2 over weekend in Florida

CMU softball was fired up in Florida for another weekend event of games  

The Chippewas split the first two games on Friday taking a loss to Southern Mississippi 3-0 and then taking down Nebraska at Omaha 4-1.

in the victory over Nebraska at Omaha, sophomore Grace Lehto pitched a complete game. She allowed just one run while striking out a career-high 12 batters. Senior Shannon Stein hit her fifth home run of the season. 

Game three

Starting off the second day of their weekend-filled games in Florida, the Chippewas turned a two-run deficit into a 4-4 tie to sent it into an extra inning. 

They couldn't sustain the rally, falling to Middle Tennessee 7-5. 

Kaitlyn Bean got the start for the Chippewas, she surrendered three runs on seven hits. Bean allowed one walk and finished with three strikeouts. Lehto was put in at the fourth to relieve Bean. 

Kelsey Alexander led off the bottom of the seventh with a long shot over the fence, a back-to-back walk by Middle Tennessee's pitcher forced a pitching change. Skylar Coberly welcomed the new pitcher by singling to center field.

Going into the top of the eighth, the Chippewas couldn't quite put a stop to Middle Tennessee's bats as they allowed three runs. 

With Emily Bracamonte placed on second base under the tie-breaker rule, Bracamonte scored on a Middle Tennessee error. With two outs, Stein stepped up to the plate but couldn't deliver as she flew out to end the game. 

Game four

Bats were on fire for the Chippewas in their 14-7 win over Rhode Island for their first game Sunday. 

Maddy Wallace made her first career start on the mound as a Chippewa. Faith Howe came in to close the game for CMU. 

The Chippewas started strong early taking an early 12-1 lead in the fourth inning. Rhode Island finally found a spark on their bats. Rhode Island added three runs in the fifth to close the gap to six. 

Rhode Island continued to have action at the plate scoring four runs in the sixth. Trying to sneak a runner home but was gunned down at the plate by a throw from the Chippewas outfield. 

Sami Mills secured two more for the Chippewas with a long shot deep into the green to score two more runs into the Chippewas. Rhode Island had their one last chance to start a rally but came up short to the Chippewas 14-7. 

Game five

The Chippewas took down Georgetown 5-1 in their second game Sunday.

Bean was back on the mound for the Chippewas in her second start of the day. Bean allowed four hits and got the win with eight strikeouts.

Georgetown started off strong crossing the plate first. The Chippewas answered right back to tie the ball game at one. Bats were quiet for both dugouts for the next two innings. 

Skylar Coberley and Caitlyn Britton worked the left side, breaking the silence. Brittons single to left center brought Coberley home and put the Chippewas up by 1.

After two walks, the Chippewas defense backed their pitcher up leaving two runners stranded on base. 

Shannon Stein continued to bring the heat at the plate with a 2-run home run over right center to take the lead 4-1 in the fifth inning. Stein continues to lead offensively with now six home runs on the season. The Chippewas defense came together to sit Georgetown down, sending them into one more chance to up their lead. 

The Chippewas crowd one more run from Abbey Tolmie single down the infield line to take their lead to 5-1. The Chippewa defense put a top to Georgetown with runners in scoring position to finish the game 5-1. 

The Chippewas will continue in Florida on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Long Island University starting at 12 p.m.
