Chippewas finish ninth at MAC championships

Sophomore Hayley Manners won the long jump to pace Central Michigan’s track and field team at the Mid-American Conference indoor championships. 

Manners jumped her personal best 6.23 meters, shattering her previous best long jump of 6.03 meters. Besides her victory, CMU saw three other top-10 finishes on Friday.

Freshman Aliyah Boeve finished in sixth in the weight throw throwing 18.00 meters. Freshman Mohogany Wells fouled.

Olivia Hanky finished sixth in the pentathlon with 3,514 points.

CMU’s Jelena Prescott, Emma Francis, Maija Rettelle and Natalie Newcombe finished in eighth place in the distance medley with a time of 12:22.16.

The Chippewas were looking good as they ended Friday in 5th place with 17 points in a 12-team field.

CMU started Saturday off strong with a third-place finish from Sophomore Reghan Draper in the 60-meter dash with a personal best time of 7.56. Sophomore Tricia Pierce finished fourth in the pole vault.

The Chippewas also got two seventh place finishes from Manners in the triple jump and Alexis Gourrier in the 800-meter dash.

This wasn’t enough for CMU as the Chippewas ended up finishing in 9th place with 35 points in the Mid-American Championships.

Akron came in first with 117.5 points, followed by Eastern Michigan with 84.5 points and Northern Illinois with 70 points.

CMU will look to bounce back at the NCAA Championships March 11-12 in Birmingham, Alabama.
