The Free Tree Planting Program of Mount Pleasant has commenced for 20 years and is back again this spring. Free Tree is gathering applications from residential and commercial property owners, as well as tenants, to receive a free tree to plant on their property.

Free Tree stemmed from the Urban Forestry Plan. The Urban Forestry plan was enforced to combat diseased trees from destroying surrounding trees in the area. It is a program working to manage forest conservation along with policy development and education.

Jason Moore, director of Public Works for the city of Mount Pleasant said the city looks to plant diverse species of trees so diseases can be avoided.

Each year Free Tree creates an online brochure with information on how to take care of the tree the recipient receives, as well as a list of trees to choose from. This year Free Tree is offering Apollo Maple, Beacon Oak, Regal Prince Oak or Honeylocust trees.

“We appreciate having folks make the request because that gives us a spot that we're pretty sure the tree is going to be taken care of. We know the person wants it and so it's a good thing if people apply,” Moore said.

Applications for a free tree must be completed by March 1. For more information and to apply for a free tree, visit Mount Pleasant's blog.
