UPDATE: New Green Tree location slated to open in November
Green Tree Cooperative Grocery's new downtown location is still under construction in the property located at 410 W Broadway known as "Parcel B."
Construction on the 50,000 square-foot building, which was originally planned to be finished in late October, was delayed. Green Tree's new home now plans to open Nov. 10.
“There have been some construction delays a lot of people are experiencing right now," Marketing Manager Laura Coffee said. "It's a combination of a lot of little things that set us back but we are making a lot of progress now."
Green Tree is a cooperative grocery store, which means it is owned by a large group of people instead of a few. Almost 3,000 people from Mount Pleasant and surrounding areas have part ownership in Green Tree including some Central Michigan University students.
Construction of the new location is still underway but Green Tree began the process of moving its location years ago. General Manager Sarah Christensen said spirits are still high for the big move.
“We have been looking for a place to move to for more than five years,” Christensen said. “We were always interested in that vacant lot between City Hall and Mountain Town, this location worked out and we got to be a part of this larger project.”
Since 1970, Green Tree has been selling organic produce in Mount Pleasant from 214 N Franklin Street. GreenTree will make up 75 percent of Parcel B's ground floor, meaning, the new space is about four times larger than the property on Franklin Street.
While the Green Tree Grocery will take up the first floor of the building there will also be 48 apartments on the upper floors.
