Dream Central to host Refugee Delegate for Hispanic Heritage Month
As part of Central Michigan University's Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations, registered student organization Dream Central is hosting Edwin Hernandez, the Michigan Refugee Congress Delegate.
The event will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5 in the Bovee University Center Auditorium, Room 302.
Hernandez, a Lansing Community College student, will be discussing his journey from an unaccompanied minor to a Refugee Congress Delegate for Michigan, Dream Central President Kevin Bautista-Mancilla said.
The event will also feature a presentation from Dream Central. The organization will go over the diversity of immigrants, the hardships they face, and social injustices.
“The assumptions always start with a Latinx person or Hispanic person or predominantly Mexican, which not every immigrant is Mexican,” Bautista-Mancilla said. “Hopefully with (Hernandez) sharing his story, and everything that we're going to be sharing, everyone will take the component out of that and continue on being an ally and fighting for those rights."
Bautista-Mancilla encourages students to attend and hear Hernandez's powerful story. He said he believes students can gain experience from it and hear the real side of immigrant hardships.
