Graphic design students will be presenting a capstone project entitled “Highlighted in Black: Hidden Hues” as a part of the Graphic Design 2021 Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition.

The project will be open for viewing April 6-17 in the University Art Gallery.

Displays will seek to educate the audience about racism within education systems, societal structures, institutions, the medical field, personal relationships and other forms of communication.

The course, taught by graphic design faculty member David Stairs, has 19 students who contributed to the capstone project.

Senior Ellyn Yost, who is in the class, said that being able to raise awareness about “deep-rooted issues” has been a meaningful experience.

“It was also very beneficial to research about how prevalent systemic racism has been on the everyday lives of minority groups for generations,” Yost said. “I believe now is as good of a time as ever to talk about these major issues, especially with recent current events.”

The University Art Gallery’s hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays.
