Central Michigan quarterback Daniel Richardson motions a receiver against Northern Illinois Nov. 2 at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.

Daniel Richardson has been tabbed the starting quarterback for Central Michigan in its season opener against Ohio.

During a Mid-American Conference media day Zoom call on Thursday, coach Jim McElwain did not have an update on senior David Moore in terms of the quarterback's reinstatement from suspension following a positive test for an NCAA-banned substance on Oct. 7, 2019.

"We're just waiting on the final report from the NCAA as far as moving forward, still haven't gotten anything there," McElwain said. "If not, we'll go ahead with (Richardson) and Ty Brock."

If Moore is unavailable, Richardson, a redshirt freshman, would be the starter for the Chippewas in their season opener at 7 p.m. on Nov. 4 against Ohio in Kelly/Shorts Stadium.

Throughout fall camp, offensive coordinator Charlie Frye and McElwain noted Richardson's development by working in the offense last season. The Miami, Florida native was also in charge of relaying signs to Moore and starting quarterback Quinten Dormady.

"(Richardson has) gotten a lot better in the 18 months that he’s been here" Frye said on Oct. 15. "You can see the progress and the development, the confidence which he’s playing with."

McElwain added that graduate transfer Ty Brock will play a large part in the offense. Frye and McElwain have been excited about Brock's ability to run the football.

"(Brock) is also able to do some things that the others can't do with his feet," McElwain said. "He gives us very unique options when he's in there."
