'La Gente' program welcomes Latinx/Hispanic identities
"La Gente" is hosted for current Latinx/Hispanic students and allies to socialize, connect and share resources two Thursdays a month via Webex.
The program was created by the Multicultural Academic Student Services office to create community and relationships within the Latinx and Hispanic culture on Central Michigan University’s campus.
Over time there will be planned events and discussions based on the cultures.
“We want our Latinx scholars to know there is a place where they can come together with folks who share a similar cultural experience to share resources and make connections,” Wade Tomson, assistant director of MASS, said.
The ultimate goal of the group is the sense of home away from home. The focus is to create a strong community with students that are spread all across campus with similar identities.
“This vacancy of cultural spaces is what leads many Latinx students to have identity crises and drop out of higher education,” MAC Scholars Peer Advisor Alejandro Salais said.
