The Viper, a therapy dog, lays down to be petted by Grand Rapids junior Emily Doucett in the Baber Room of the Charles V. Park Library Oct. 2.

Every first and third Friday of the month, the Central Michigan University Counseling Center provides the opportunity to spend time with therapy dogs.

"Pause for Paws," a group therapy workshop takes place in the Counseling Center from 3:30-5 p.m. every first and third Friday in Foust 135.

Therapy Dogs International has partnered with the university to host "Pause for Paws" for the past two years, bringing calm and furry friends to the Counseling Center to help struggling students.

“I think that, as a pet lover, being with an animal can relieve stress, calm your heart, and slow your breathing,” said Counseling Center Associate Director Michelle Bigard. “It’s a lovely way to take a break.”

Students are welcome to stay as long as they’d like, even if it’s only for ten minutes or for the full hour-and-a-half. Bigard said students should not feel awkward coming in alone.
