Central Michigan play-by-play broadcaster Don Chiodo was killed in a car crash involving a tractor-trailer in Gratiot County Wednesday afternoon, according to the Gratiot County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's deputies responded to the fatal crash at 2:42 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, on M-46 just west of Pingree Road in Seville Township of Gratiot County, according to a news release issued by the sheriff's office.

Police said Chiodo, of Mount Pleasant, was traveling east on M-46 when his vehicle crossed the center line, colliding head-on with a westbound tractor-trailer driven by Roy Gibson, of Mason Township.

The reason why Chiodo, 54, crossed over the center line remains under investigation, the release said. Investigators do not believe speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.

Chiodo was later pronounced dead at Mid Michigan Medical Center Gratiot, police said.

Police said Gibson was treated and released after the crash.

Both drivers in the two-vehicle crash were wearing seatbelts, police said.

Police said an autopsy will be conducted on Chiodo to determine whether he died from injuries in the crash or a medical condition prior to the crash.

Sheriff's deputies were assisted on the scene by Alma Fire Department, Sumner Seville Rescue, MMR and the Michigan State Police Accident Investigation Team.
