Offensive lineman Clay Walderzak named semifinalist for Campbell Trophy
Clay Walderzak has been named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy.
The award recognizes a senior or graduate student in his final year of elegibility who combines on-field and academic success and demonstrates strong character, leadership and citizenship.
It is awarded by the National Football Foundation and the College Football Hall of Fame and goes to the student-athlete determined by the organization to be the best football scholar-athlete in the country.
Walderzak, a Standish native, is a graduate student and has overcame several injuries during his career as a Chippewa. He is currently the starting left tackle on the offensive line.
Walderzak is working on a master's degree after earning his Bachelor of Science as a engineering technology and a 3.25 grade point average when he completed his undergraduate program.
Last season, Walderzak was named the Chippewas' Derrick Nash Unsung Hero Award and was named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team.
The NFF will announce the finalists on Oct. 30 and each finalist will receive $18,000 in postgraduate scholarships as a member of the 2019 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class. The finalists will attend the group's annual awards dinner in New York on Dec. 10 where the Campbell Trophy winner will be announced.
