CMU's Pedrick named MAC Gymnast of the Week
In just the first week of the season, Central Michigan gymnastics junior Denelle Pedrick has earned Mid-American Conference Gymnast of the Week honors.
Led by Pedrick, the 30th-ranked Chippewas started their season with a strong performance in their home quad-team meet Sunday at McGuirk Arena against No. 22 Illinois, No. 33 Arizona and Bridgeport, a Division II powerhouse.
Pedrick set the pace for the Chippewas on the floor exercise. She posted a 9.850 on the final rotation for a team score of 49.125 in that event and a 194.875 team total for the meet. That performance was just enough, as it gave the Chippewas a slim victory in come-from-behind fashion on Sunday.
The Wilcox, Saskatchewan, junior won the balance beam with another individual score of 9.850 and finished fifth on the bars with a 9.775.
Pedrick, who has qualified for the NCAA Championships twice, scored a 38.950 in the all-around, which gave her a close second place finish to Arizona's Maddi Leydin, who posted a 39.050.
