Guests artists include Canadian saxophonist Kirk MacDonald and percussionist Adam Nussbaum
Central Michigan University’s music fraternity Phi Mu Alpha will host its 46th annual Jazz Weekend Friday, Feb. 1.
The CMU School of Music will invite guest artists, clinicians, and over 1,200 various high school and middle school students from 70 bands across the state. These bands will be performing to receive comments, suggestions, ratings and awards from top clinicians and adjudicators.
The bands perform in a variety of locations from the Staples Family Concert Hall, Norman C. Dietz Band Hall, the Bovee University Center, Powers Ballroom and Plachta Auditorium.
High school students will be divided by class into competition groups, and an award ceremony will later take place in Plachta Auditorium. School of Music ensembles Jazzbone and Jazz Central will be performing, as well as a variety of CMU quartets and combos playing in the Down Under Food Court in the Bovee University Center.
"I remember coming to this event in high school, and it's one of the reasons I chose to study at music here," said Laingsburg junior Daniel Briggs, assistant Jazz Weekend coordinator for Phi Mu Alpha.
This year’s guest artists features the Canadian saxophonist Kirk MacDonald, artistic director for the "Youth Jazz Canada" project and director of "National Youth Jazz Combo", as well as percussionist Adam Nussbaum.
Macdonald will be performing Friday, February 1st at 8 P.M. in Plachta auditorium.
Tickets are on sale now on Ticket Central and cost $10 for adults and $7 for students and seniors.
