Volleyball falls to NIU in five sets

CMU had swept their previous two MAC opponents, but five sets were needed to decide the victor in Friday nights match at Northern Illinois University.  The Huskies won the final two sets and sent the Chippewa’s to the bottom of the MAC West standings with a 4-11 conference record, 7-20 overall. 

How it Happened 

NIU won the first set convincingly by a margin of  25-18.  The Chippewa’s hitting percentage in the set was just .028.  CMU would storm back to win the next two sets 25-23.  NIU answered the challenge by winning the fourth set 25-20 and the fifth 15-10.

The Huskies were led by Meg Wolowicz with 21 kills.  Grace Balensiefer added 40 assists and Miranda Karlen contributed with 24 digs.  NIU recorded 21 blocks while CMU only managed 8.  

Lyza Myers and Kalina Smith paced the Chippewa’s offense with 18 and 16 kills respectively.  Kendall Braate chipped in with 30 assists.  

What’s Next 

CMU will travel to Kalamazoo on Saturday to battle rival Western Michigan in both teams regular season finale.  The Broncos are 5-10 in the MAC and 15-4 overall.
