Fleming lecture series to host two-day lecture on mathematics
Professor of Mathematics Education at University of Haifa Ana Sfard will give a two-day lecture on mathematics Oct. 1-2 at the Biosciences building and Pearce Hall.
The event is part of the Fleming Lecture Series: a program with intent to bring speakers to CMU and give compelling lectures on mathematics.
Sfard teaches and conducts research on learning sciences, and was a recipient of the Hans Freudenthal Medal in 2007. She is also a member of the National Academy of Education.
The first portion of Sfard’s lecture, “Mathematics Learning: Does Language Make a Difference?”, will cover the influence that language has on mathematics. The event will begin at 4 p.m. in Biosciences 1010, followed by a reception outside the lecture hall.
The second part of her lecture, “What is Mathematics and Why Does it Matter?” focuses on thinking mathematically, and the importance of how mathematic materials are taught and learned. The lecture will begin at 4 p.m. in Pearce 127, and will be followed by light refreshments in Pearce 227.
