Barbecue event to celebrate diversity with grilled food
Barbecue season isn't over yet. Celebrate diversity at Barbecue Around the World, an event from 3-5 p.m. at Island Park on Sept. 22.
Hosted by Central Michigan University's International Student Organization, this event is meant to be a fun way for domestic community members to socialize with people from other countries.
Senior Sara Shalabi, president of ISO, said the purpose of the organization is to be a "connecting bridge" between Americans and the international students at Central Michigan University. Shalabi herself is from Saudi Arabia, and is half Lebanese.
The food will showcase flavors from different countries but include classics like grilled beef, chicken patties and veggie burgers. For the convenience of religious diversity, halal options will be available as well.
To cover the cost of supplies, tickets for the event are $5 in advance, and can be bought from 1-4 p.m. at the Bovee University Center on Tuesday, Sept. 18, or purchased at the event for $6. Cash, or payment via Cash App is accepted and children are free.
In addition to food, there will be music, games and activities inspired and derived from different cultures and countries.
