Perfecting the Art of Dartying

If there’s one thing you learn in college quickly, it’s the value of a good darty. Not many things can top a sunny weekend with some friends and pretending like you have no responsibilities. It’s not all fun and games, though. Dartying is an art and takes a lot of skill to master. Here are some steps you can take on your path to dartying enlightenment. (To those who spend their time hiding under rocks: darty = day + party.)

What you’ll need:

  1. Good weather.
Here in mid Michigan, we can’t be too picky with what we call “nice weather.” Basically anything above 40 degrees is prime dartying weather - bonus if it’s a sunny day.
  2. Other people.
If you live in a dorm, run through the halls and let people know what’s about to go down. If you live off campus, just start playing music and the people will come. Whatever you do, make sure you have a solid crew to not look like a weirdo dartying alone.
  3. A solid playlist.
Going off of my last point, good music will make people flock to your door. However, bad music will keep people far, far away. If you want your darty to be a success, get a diverse playlist with upbeat music. You can’t go wrong with throwbacks from the 2000s, mainstream country and some Chainsmokers for all the basic girls. Here’s a couple classic playlists I found on Spotify that are sure to be a hit: Ultimate White Girl Pregame & Day Party.
  4. Stay thirsty, my friends.
This part is really up to your personal preferences. You could get down and Dilly Dilly, let Red Bull give you wiiings or open happiness with a Coca-Cola. Whatever quenches your thirst, make sure you’ve got an ice-cold cooler full of your go-to beverages.
  5. Some classic games.
You know what I’m talking about. Corn hole, baseballs, footballs, ping pong and other classics alike. If you really know what’s up, you’ll create your own slip ‘n slide to show everyone you know how to darty like an expert.

The ideal darty outfit

Step 1: A shirt. Darty shirts can range anywhere from a jersey, to a hawaiian shirt, to bright colors and denim. Whatever makes you feel most comfortable dartying your face off in.

Step 2: Pants. Please don’t forget these. I suggest going with ripped jeans for the ladies and jorts for the fellas. Something about darty season screams denim overload.

Step 3: Sunglasses. Like momma always says, “the sun never sets on cool.” So, make sure you get your favorite pair of fake Ray Bans to block out the haters - and, ya know, UV rays too.

Step 4 (optional): Shoes. Depending on if you're crushin' it on the slip 'n slide or not, you may not need shoes on this darty day. Take your pick of Crocs, Sperry's, Converse, New Balances - you name it. Just don't put your feet near me.

All of the above ingredients combined makes for a successful darty season. Grab your friends and show them that we don’t take dartying lightly around here. It’s an art and it’s a skill, so make the best of it and enjoy it while it lasts.
