Students from U.K. to debate American presidential election
Two students from the United Kingdom will visit Central Michigan University to engage in a debate with CMU’s debate team at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15 in the Park Library Auditorium.
A reception in the Baber Room will follow.
CMU is just one stop on the National Communication Association’s Committee on International Discussion and Debate tour which started in September and will continue through November.
Since 1922, CIDD strives to reinforce the value of dialogue as the preferred means for resolving international and intercultural differences.
“(The debate) will be interesting because we’re going to have some outside perspective on the U.S. election, which can offer a fresh take on it,” said Joseph Packer, director of debate and communication and dramatic arts professor.
Packer said will be speeches and opportunities for the audience to interrupt when the other person is speaking to ask questions. One of the debate teams will be defending Democratic presidential nominee Clinton, and the other will be defending Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.
CMU’s debate team has won two of three debates they’ve had this year. Concerning the U.K. debaters, the circuit they compete on is directed towards a public audience, so they’re going to be well prepared, Packer said.
“It should be a really entertaining and informative debate,” he said.
