Police: Be aware of tailgating rules before football game

Students participate in tailgating on Sept. 17 before the Chippewas game against UNLV outside of Kelly/Shorts Stadium.

Aside from the football game between Central Michigan and Western Michigan on Saturday, students and visitors participating in tailgating activities are advised to do so wisely.

CMU Police Department enforces the university’s tailgating policy to ensure a safe environment during all sporting events.

Alcoholic beverages are only permitted during football game tailgates. Alcoholic beverages are not allowed at any other sporting events without prior written approval from the athletic department. Drinking games or activities encouraging excessive alcohol consumption is also prohibited.

Tailgating will only be allowed no earlier than four hours prior to the start of the game and is prohibited once the game begins.

All service vehicles are required to have a parking/service pass. Vehicles with a trailer must also have prior written approval from the Athletics Department.

The policy stresses Michigan laws involving the possession, consumption and distribution of alcohol and controlled substances will be in effect.

Any students found in violation of the policy may be subject to termination of tailgating privileges and disciplinary action through the CMU Office of Student Life.

If CMU Police observe anyone violating the policy, they will be notified of the violation and may be asked to leave the premises. Anyone who fails to leave upon request may face arrest by CMU Police for trespassing.

Any questions about the policy should be directed to the CMU Police Special Events Coordinator at 989-774-7394.
