Weekend sports recap
Several Central Michigan sports teams competed during the weekend. Here is a rundown of how each team fared.
Volleyball finishes 1-2 at UCF Challenge
After entering the weekend on a four-game win streak, the CMU volleyball team finished the Central Florida Challenge 1-2.
In their first match of the weekend, the Chippewas fell to Central Arkansas 3-0. It was CMU’s fifth loss in straight sets this season.
CMU was able to bounce back in its second match Friday, topping North Carolina at Ashville 3-0. Junior outside hitters Jordan Bueter and Taylor Robertson each tallied 10 kills in the win.
Despite a 43-assist performance by senior setter Kathia Sanchez, the Chippewas ended the tournament with a 3-2 loss to UCF.
Robertson led the team offensively with 29 kills, followed by 26 from Bueter and 20 from sophomore Laura Willson.
Sanchez finished the tournament with 91 assists and Megan Kern led the way defensively with 42 digs.
The Chippewas (6-6) begin Mid-American Conference play Friday at Ball State.
Field Hockey blown out by Michigan
Field Hockey dropped to 1-6 on the season with a 10-0 loss to Michigan on Sunday.
After finishing the first half trailing 2-0, the Chippewas were unable to keep up as the Wolverines scored three goals within the first five minutes of the second half to put the match out of reach.
CMU goalkeeper Abigail Ebersole recorded 11 saves during the game. The Chippewas have struggled offensively this season scoring just four goals in their first seven contests.
CMU looks to get back on track Friday at home against Miami (OH).
Runners take fourth, fifth at MSU
The men’s cross country team finished fourth, while the women’s team placed fifth in the Michigan State Spartan Invitational on Friday.
Senior Spencer Nousain led the men’s team with a time of 26 minutes and 14 seconds, which was good for 65th place.
On the women’s side, Kelly McNeely finished the race 94th at 23:45 to lead the Chippewas.
Both teams are back in action for the Roy Griak Invite on Saturday in Minneapolis.
