Michael Kinville, 23, was arrested on charges of assault by strangulation and domestic violence on May 30.

Former Central Michigan University football player Michael Kinville plead no contest to two charges, after facing assault by strangulation and domestic violence charges when police said he choked his girlfriend May 30 inside a Deerfield Village apartment.

Kinville plead no contest to one count of aggravated domestic assault and one count of domestic violence. The aggravated assault charge was reduced from an original charge of assault by strangulation. His trial was set to begin Monday, but instead Kinville will be sentenced Dec. 10.

On the first offense, a domestic violence charge can carry a sentence of up to 93 days in jail and $500 in fines under Michigan law. The first offense of aggravated domestic violence is a misdemeanor that can carry a one-year jail sentence and up to a $1,000 fine.

The 23-year-old declined to comment after entering his plea.

Kinville is represented by Mount Pleasant attorney Daniel O'Neil. According to the People's Law Dictionary, pleading no contest is generally taken to protect the defendant from trial. This plea is not necessarily admitting guilt, but admitting to the truth of facts stated in complaints.
