Welcome Weekend citation fines total more than $100k

Mount Pleasant police wrote nearly 200 citations throughout Welcome Weekend 2015. Police wrote 107 open intoxicant tickets, 56 minors in possession of alcohol citations and a slew of other offenses.

Some offenses carry $100 fines; others could cost students up to $2,000. Assuming each person cited received a maximum fine, the 192 offenses add up to $105,000. This excludes court costs, fees and potential jail time.

Here's a list of each citation and the consequence it carries:

Open intox

  • 107 citations, totaling $53,500 in fines.
  • Open intoxicants in public is a misdemeanor with a $500 fine and a potential 90 days in jail.

Minor in possession of alcohol

  • 56 citations, totaling $28,000 in fines.
  • An MIP is a misdemeanor with a $100 to $500 fine. The state may suspend a driver's license, immobilize a vehicle or require probation screenings.

Disorderly conduct

  • 5 citations, totaling $2,500 in fines.
  • Disorderly conduct is a misdemeanor with a $100 to $500 fine and a potential 90 days in jail.

Nuisance party

  • 2 citations, totaling $1,000 in fines.
  • Allowing, hosting or attending a nuisance party is a misdemeanor with a $500 fine and a potential 90 days in jail. 

Resisting and obstruction

  • 7 citations, totaling $14,000 in fines.
  • Resisting and obstruction is a felony with a fine of $2,000 or two years in jail or both.

Possession of drugs (marijuana)

  • 2 citations, totaling $4,000 in fines.
  • A possessions of drugs (marijuana) is a misdemeanor with a $2,000 fine and a potential year in jail.

Retail fraud

  • 1 citation, totaling $500 to $2,000 in fines.
  • A retail fraud (2nd degree) is a misdemeanor with a $2,000 fine and a potential year in jail. Retail fraud (3rd degree) is a misdemeanor with a $500 fine and a potential 93 days in jail.

Arrested on warrant from other departments

  • 2 individuals arrested on existing warrants
  • The fine for their offenses or arrests is unknown.
