Gymnastics grabs road win at Kent State
The Central Michigan University gymnastics team defeated rival Kent State with a massive scoreline on Sunday.
CMU used several strategies to put away their Mid-American Conference opponents.
The Chippewas nailed 21 out of 24 routines. Scoring a 196.4, a season-high for Head Coach Jerry Reighard and his team, it was the eighth best finish for CMU in school history.
The Golden Flashes scored a 195.325 in the loss. KSU freshman Rachel Stypinksi scored a 9.95 on floor and 9.9 on beam.
It was a shootout on floor with the worst score between both teams being a 9.75. The Chippewas scored a 49.3 on floor as a team.
“I really have to congratulate our seniors,” said Reighard. “They held us together, they carried not only the competitive part but also the focus on the rest of the team.”
Senior Halle Moraw scored 9.85, 9.9 and finished with another 9.9. Senior Kylie Fagan scored multiple 9’s as well with a 9.25 on bars and a 9.9 on beam.
Junior Taylor Bolender scored a 9.8 on bars and finished with a 9.875 on floor. Bolender is a native of Ohio.
“It was really nice seeing all of my family and we got to go to dinner at my house, which was really cool,” said Bolender. “It was nice having my family and friends there cheering us on, it motivates you knowing you have just as many fans there as they do (Kent State).”
The Chippewas head back to Mount Pleasant to prepare for their next MAC matchup at 1 p.m. on Sunday in McGuirk Arena against Bowling Green State University.
