Cristy Freese, the coach with the most wins in Central Michigan University field hockey history, will soon have a new job on campus.

Freese, who has coached the team for the past 29 seasons, will serve as a Senior Associate Athletic Director the department announced Monday, Jan. 5.

A nationwide search is currently ongoing to find Freese's replacement as CMU's field hockey coach, according to a press release from CMU Athletics.

Freese will oversee the program until a replacement is named, at which time she will begin the transition to her new position.

“I first want to thank Cristy for her outstanding tenure as our field hockey coach as she built a program which was highly successful both on and off the field,” CMU Director of Athletics Dave Heeke said in the statement. “Her ability to build a successful program is also a big reason I feel she will be a terrific addition to our senior leadership team. Cristy understands what it takes to create an outstanding experience for our student-athletes, which is at the core of our mission.“

Freese led the Chippewas to the program's second Mid-American Conference Championship in 2014. The Chippewas were 5-1 in conference competition last season.

Freese graduated from Ohio State University in 1980 with a degree in education and joined CMU in 1986.
