A Central Michigan University professor of journalism was named the City of Mount Pleasant communications director.

Tracy Burton, who has held the position in an interim role since May, will handle the city's media relations efforts and branding among other duties.

“I am very excited to lead communications on behalf of the City,” Burton said. “I am looking forward to collaborating with CMU, downtown businesses and many others to increase our visibility and community outreach efforts.”

Burton brings more than 10 years of experience with the media to the position.

Most recently, she led a group of CMU journalism students as they reported on local organic farming, a staple of the Mid-Michigan community.

Burton first joined CMU in its public relations department in 2008.

“The interview committees were particularly impressed with the variety of experiences and skills that Tracy brings from her prior positions,” said Interim City Manager Nancy Ridley in a statement. “We look forward to the connections Tracy will make to provide information within our community and the outreach to potential residents, businesses and visitors.”

The statement from the city said an "extensive" search was conducted before Burton was selected.
