Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mark Schauer makes surprise appearance at Peters meet-and-greet
To the surprise of many attending the meet-and-greet with U.S. Rep. Gary Peters on Monday, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mark Schauer made an unexpected guest appearance.
Hosted by the College Democrats registered student organization, the event at the Bovee University Center gave Central Michigan University students the chance to meet with and learn about the two candidates.
Increasing funding for education in the state was the focus of Schauer's speech. Schauer said his opponent in the election, Republican incumbent Gov. Rick Snyder, has made severe cuts to education.
"Teaching is the most important profession in our society," Schauer said. "The pay and benefits of teachers have been cut while kids are in overcrowded classrooms, suffering as a result of Snyder taking money away from our schools."
While they were both attending a recent Service Employees International Union convention, Peters invited Schauer to join him at CMU. Schauer agreed to join Peters, who is running for Senate, and made the trip to Mount Pleasant.
"Mark Schauer's appearance was a pleasant surprise for us," said Taylor Gehrcke, president of College Democrats. "I think he has a lot to contribute to college-age voters because he has such an educational focus."
In the speech, Schauer emphasized that Michigan is a Democratic state and the key to victory for the party is high-voter turnout. He encouraged students to hit the streets and inspire people to vote in the upcoming election.
