Mount Pleasant mayor dubs April Sexual Assault Awareness Month
April will be considered Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
Mount Pleasant Mayor Sharon Tilmann made the announcement Monday in conjunction with the federal government and the state of Michigan.
The proclamation at Monday's city commission meeting was made to Toni Davis, a representative from Women's Aid Service, an organization that fights and raises awareness about sexual assault in the Isabella, Gratiot and Clare counties.
Tilmann cited a study conducted by the U.S. Department of Justice in 2000, "The Sexual Victimization of Women," that found one in five women are sexually assaulted by the time they finish college.
"We must work together to educate our community about what can be done to prevent sexual assault and how to support survivors," Tilmann said.
