Field hockey loses in double overtime to end regular season
For the second straight season, field hockey suffered a double-overtime loss to end Mid-American Conference play with a 2-1 loss at Miami (Ohio) on Saturday.
The winning goal came from RedHawks junior backline Ali Froede, giving the RedHawks the No. 3 seed and the Chippewas No. 4 in the upcoming MAC tournament.
Despite the loss, sophomore goalkeeper Sadie Reynolds had a stellar game with 17 saves. However, the Chippewas failed to test Miami keeper Sarah Mueller, as she only had to make two saves the entire game.
CMU was outshot 27-8 by the RedHawks, with only two of the eight on goal.
The match brings CMU to 6-11 for the regular season and Miami to 9-9.
After another loss on the road, that brings the team’s away record to 1-7, it is apparent the Chippewas struggle to win away from home. The single home loss the Chippewas hold is to No. 13 Northwestern.
CMU, Miami and Ohio each finished 3-2 in MAC play. The Bobcats beat the MAC champion Golden Flashes, giving them the No. 2 seed.
CMU will take on No. 1 seeded Kent State on Friday.
The Golden Flashes have broken the Chippewas hearts many times in the past few seasons. They suffered a 3-2 overtime loss earlier in the season, and it was that 3-2 loss to KSU that ended the season last year in the MAC tournament. It was a 1-0 double overtime loss to end the regular season last year that kept the Chippewas from winning the MAC regular season championship.
In fact, three of the last five CMU and Kent State games were decided in overtime, with the Golden Flashes winning them all. The Chippewas haven’t won in this matchup since a 4-1 win in 2007.
