Field hockey snaps losing streak before beginning MAC play
After a six-game losing streak, field hockey managed to seal a 2-1 overtime victory against UC Davis Friday.
Sophomore midfielder Kaysie Gregory knocked in the final goal to boost CMU to a 3-6 record, while the Aggies stand at 1-7.
Five Chippewas combined for nine shots on goal.
Junior forward Cayleigh Immelman was responsible for three of those, while junior midfielder Mary Alice Moore and freshman midfielder Maude Stalars had two apiece. Senior forward Bailey McKeon and Gregory each had one. Sophomore goalkeeper Sadie Reynolds pitched in seven saves.
The Chippewas notched their first goal at the 27:04 mark in the first half, when Mckeon passed off a penalty corner to Immelman, who then hit it through the Aggies’s heavy defense and to the right of UC Davis goalkeeper Danielle Herrington.
Throughout Friday’s game, the Chippewas had six penalty corner opportunities, but only managed to score on one.
At 44:22, the Aggies responded and tied the game up 1-1 with UC Davis’ Coley LemMon slipping it past Reynolds off a rebound.
For the rest of the second half, the game went back and forth without either team managing to gain an advantage. After the game kicked into overtime, Reynolds managed to deflect two crucial shots on goal before Gregory found the left side of the Aggies’ cage to put CMU up 2-1.
This was the first win since the team started 2-0 at home to begin the season. It'll return home next weekend at the CMU Field Hockey Complex, where the Chippewas will kick off Mid-American Conference play against Ball State (5-4).
