Field hockey rolls to victory this weekend with a pair of home wins
Field hockey went head-to-head with the St. Louis and Robert Morris this weekend as the Chippewas rolled.
CMU went into Sunday's game with the Billikens with momentum gained in its 2-0 victory against Robert Morris Friday. St. Louis suffered a loss at the CMU Field Hockey Complex Saturday after losing to RMU.
The Chippewas offense had too many lethal weapons for the Billikens defense to handle, putting away St. Louis handily, 6-1, with a hat trick from junior midfielder Mary Moore.
“Both games this weekend Mary Moore started on the left mid, but we moved her up to the left forward (Sunday) and that’s for her to shine a little bit,” said head coach Cristy Freese
The offensive onslaught began midway through the first half for the Chippewas. A set play goal from senior forward Bailey McKeon started the scoring for CMU.
With 25 seconds remaining, the Chippewas scored another set play goal and bettered their lead into halftime. Moore’s first of three to start her day.
CMU took full advantage after half, two goals coming within 40 seconds of each other.
The clock hit zero, but St. Louis had one last corner to try to salvage something from the match, and sure enough, Megan Rogers put one home to make the final score 6-1 CMU.
“We feel that we have a lot of versatility in our team and obviously lot of scorers,” Freese said. “Having the offensive weapons is what you want to have so that if they try to shut down Cayleigh or Bailey or anybody we have other people who can score.”
The Chippewas made the most out of their two game home stand with a combined score of 8-1. CMU will travel to Delaware for a match on Friday.
“Being at home this weekend with all the parents here for Labor Day really helps and the season will only get harder from this point on,” Freese said.
Belgian freshman midfielder Maude Stalars proved her worth as she grabbed an assist with a few shots on target.
“Even though we played Maude at left forward, she’s such a great passer that she can create some things for us,” Freese said. “What we are trying to do is the ability to get the ball up to the forward line and then the ability to score the goal.”
The Chippewas start their road trip on Friday, at 3 p.m. against Delaware and after six more away matches will find their way back to Mount Pleasant on October 5 with Mid-American Conference opponent Ball State.
