Volleyball loses season opener to Oakland


Volleyball lost its first match of the season Friday, 3-1 despite the efforts of seniors setter Kelly Maxwell and defensive specialist Jenna Coates.

Maxwell had 47 assists in the match, while no other player on either team had more than 17. She was also second on the team with 13 digs on the night, second only to Coates, who had 21.

CMU scored the same amount of points as the Oakland in the match thanks to a strong start by winning the first set 25-16. The team kept it close in the next three sets, losing 26-24, 25-22 and 25-21.

The Chippewas beat the Grizzlies last season 3-1 in Mount Pleasant.

The Oakland Invitational will conclude Saturday in Rochester with the Chippewas playing Oregon State at 10:00 a.m. and Villanova at 4:30 p.m.
